WELCOME TO NORTHERN GRAMPIANS SHIRE COUNCIL

Entrusted with some of the world’s most spectacular natural scenery and a rich, golden heritage the Northern Grampians Shire has established an exceptional reputation. Here unique landscapes entwine with a proud past to underpin an inspiring and contemporary community with a vibrant future.

Located in the beautiful Grampians Region of Victoria, with regional, interstate rail and road links, the Shire covers almost 6,000 square kilometres and services a population of over 13,000 people. Established transport and communication infrastructures connect with regional, national and international markets, providing unlimited opportunities for diversity and excellence in service delivery. The township of Halls Gap is a famous escape for international tourists and domestic visitors alike.

Stawell and St Arnaud, the commercial centres, were founded on the prosperity of early gold rushes and are sustained by booming agriculture and industry. The Shire’s abundant natural, cultural and historic features have supported the continued development of thriving, resilient communities, ideally positioned to facilitate further economic growth and expansion. Comprising fertile and diverse land areas, the Shire hosts an exciting range of primary and secondary industries, together with a broad base of small businesses. As major transport exchanges during the development of the Wimmera sheep run, the Shire’s smaller townships of Navarre, Glenorchy and Marnoo, Great Western and Stuart Mill are today local service centres that support the surrounding rural community.

In the 1850s, this region offered immense hope and prosperity for gold prospectors and pioneering agriculturalists. The Northern Grampians Shire continues that same tradition today by providing a wealth of opportunity for investment, business development, employment and lifestyle.
