Kindergarten

In Victoria, children can attend two years of funded kindergarten (also called kinder or preschool) before starting school.

Northern Grampians Shire Council was proud to be one of the first six councils in Victoria to introduce Pre-Prep in 2025, replacing the previous Four-Year-Old Kindergarten program.

The learning program is the same for Four-Year-Old Kindergarten and Pre-Prep. The difference is that Pre-Prep gives children more time each week to learn, play and build social skills. Pre-Prep is offered in both sessional kindergartens and long day care centres.

In Northern Grampians Shire Council, families can access:

  • Three-Year-Old Kindergarten for 15 hours per week, followed by;
  • Pre-Prep (Four-Year-Old Kindergarten) for 16 to 30 hours per week.

All funded kindergarten programs in Victoria are taught by a qualified early childhood education teachers, who support children’s learning through play.
