Council assists the Australia Day Committee (Victoria) to reflect, respect and celebrate with our local community through events and local government awards that provide an important opportunity to acknowledge local achievements and outstanding contributions.

Australia Day Award Winners 2025

Council hosted two well-attended Australia Day ceremonies held in St Arnaud and Stawell on Sunday 26 January 2025 that were designed to show appreciation for the spirited people and groups who play a vital role in strengthening and supporting their communities. Read more here.

The following Northern Grampians Shire Council 2025 recipients of Australia Day Awards were announced on the day.

Citizen of the Year Award - John Beggs

 John-Beggs.png Mayor, Cr Karen Hyslop presents the Kara Kara Ward Citizen of the Year Award to John Beggs.

Presented by the Mayor, Cr Karen Hyslop, John Beggs was nominated for his exceptional contributions and tireless efforts. Since moving to St Arnaud in 2018 he became involved with the Lions Club, serving as president and secretary and continues to be an active participant in all the club's initiatives. One of his main initiatives was bringing the Lions Skin Check Bus to St Arnaud, which is a much-needed health service. In addition to his work with the Lions Club, he has served as the Treasurer for the St Arnaud Football Club for four years, as Vice President of the Senior Citizens Club, and as Secretary of the RSL. He is also the Lions Club representative on the St Arnaud Show Committee. He has become the go-to person for organising permits and grant applications, not just for the Lions Club, but for other organisations throughout St Arnaud. His broad expertise and readiness to help make things happen have had a positive impact on all aspects of our community.

Community Event of the Year Award - St Arnaud Fire Brigade 150th Anniversary Torchlight Parade

Cr Karen Probst presents the Kara Kara Ward Community Event of the Year Award to the St Arnaud Fire Brigade 150th Anniversary Torchlight Parade.

Presented by Cr Probst, the St Arnaud Fire Brigade 150th Anniversary Torchlight Parade was nominated for organising a remarkable event that united the town of St Arnaud. On November 16, 2024, the St Arnaud Fire Brigade celebrated its 150th anniversary with a Torchlight Parade, which not only showcased the brigade's long-standing dedication but also brought together local groups like the Rotary Club, Lions Club, and St Arnaud Citizens Band. The procession, accompanied by the band, passed historical landmarks, honouring the town’s past and celebrating the brave volunteers who have served our community. The event was a testament to years of hard work and brought the entire town together in shared memories and appreciation.

Community Group of the Year Award - Pebble Church Heritage Association

Cr Karen Probst presents the Kara Kara Ward Community Group of the Year Award to the Pebble Church Historical Association.

Presented by Cr Probst the Pebble Church Historical Association was nominated for their dedication to preserving local history and enriching the community. Founded in 2020, they quickly raised over $120,000 in under two weeks to save the historic Pebble Church, ensuring its accessibility to the public. Since then, they have completed essential restoration work and transformed the Church into a vibrant space for community events, weddings, and gatherings. The group has also enhanced the surrounding grounds, making it a welcoming spot for visitors. Their efforts not only preserve our heritage but also promote the region as a tourist destination, stimulate the local economy, and keep the community informed and engaged through regular updates. Their passion and commitment ensure the Church remains a vital part of the community for generations to come.

Young Citizen of the Year Award - DustyRaiyn McIntyre

Cr Murray Emerson presents the Kara Kara Ward Young Citizen of the Year Award to DustyRaiyn McIntyre.

Presented by Cr Emerson, DustyRaiyn McIntyre was nominated for her determination, leadership, and dedication to making a positive impact. She has actively participated in the Rural Youth Ambassador Program, Youth Parliament, and co-designed cooking classes for the Buloke Loddon Rural Youth Network. Additionally, she created a Youth Space at the Raillery Hub and led a successful community cleanup project with the Alpine Leadership School. Her involvement extends to roles such as Chief Steward at the St Arnaud Agricultural Show and engagement with the Lions Club, Orchid Society, and Community Action Network. A top student, she has already undertaken Year 12 subjects while planning a career in neuroscience or psychology. She also participated in the Evatt Model United Nations and attended the National Science Forum in Canberra. Her achievements showcase her dedication to community, leadership, and personal growth.

Senior Citizen of the Year -William 'Dick' Bray

Cr Murray Emerson presented the Kara Kara Ward Senior Citizen of the Year Award to William 'Dick' Bray.

Presented by Cr Emerson, Dick Bray was nominated for his lifetime of service and dedication to his family, business, and community, with the support of his wife. He continued his family’s legacy by managing Bray’s Drapery, creating a welcoming space for customers for decades. He contributed to the St Arnaud Hospital Board and was instrumental in the fundraising for the Elderly Persons Hostel, now Coates Hostel. Embracing the digital age, he helped establish the St Arnaud Resource Centre. A founding member of the Saints and Sinners Bike Riding Group, he also devoted over 55 years to Rotary, earning a "Paul Harris Fellow" award for his distinguished service. He played a pivotal role in numerous community projects, including the Rotary House Accommodation in Ballarat, St Arnaud Aerodrome, Sheep Pavilion renovations, Drought Funding program, and Rotary's Meals on Wheels. His tireless commitment and leadership, alongside his wife, continue to inspire the community.

Mayor, Cr Karen Hyslop presents the Central and Grampians Ward Citizen of the Year Award to Linda Fearon.

Presented by Mayor, Cr Hyslop, Linda Fearon was nominated for her outstanding contribution to the Glenorchy community. She has committed herself to researching and preserving the town’s rich history, ensuring future generations will appreciate its unique heritage. Beyond her historical work, she and her husband have created a stunning garden that has become a local attraction, complemented by ornamental pieces and artwork reflecting the area's natural beauty. She also played a key role in organising the successful "Glenorchy Then and Now" event, bringing the town's history to life through a captivating display of photographs and memorabilia. Her tireless dedication, attention to detail, and love for her community have made a lasting impact, reminding us all to honor the past while embracing the future.

Local Hero of the Year Award - Jo Bertram

Cr Jenny Greenberger presents the Local Hero of the Year Award to Jo Bertram.

Presented by Cr Greenberger, Jo Bertram was nominated for her kindness and hard work which have profoundly impacted our community. Known for her quiet acts of compassion, she has dedicated herself to helping others both privately and through her tireless volunteer work at the Cottage, next to the Church of Christ. Many years ago, she opened her home as a family daycare provider, making personal sacrifices to care for children. Even in the face of personal loss, she has always put others first, showing extraordinary strength and compassion. Her contributions often go unnoticed, as she works behind the scenes without seeking recognition, but her impact is immeasurable.

Community Group of the Year Award - Stawell Agricultural Society Inc.

Cr Justine Hide presents the Central and Grampians Ward Community Group of the Year Award to the Stawell Agricultural Society.

Presented by Cr Hide, the Stawell Agricultural Society was nominated for their passion and dedication to revitalising the Stawell Show. Faced with the challenge of a declining agricultural event, they injected new energy and creativity, turning the 2024 show into a spectacular success with a record turnout. Their blend of experience and youthful enthusiasm brought fresh ideas that revived this iconic tradition, filling the town with pride and excitement. Congratulations to this remarkable group for their hard work and commitment to the community. We look forward to what they’ll bring to the next Stawell Show.

Young Citizen of the Year - Zachary Ford

Cr Jenny Greenberger presents the first Young Citizen of the Year Award to Zachary Ford.

Presented by Cr Greenberger, Zarchary Ford was nominated for volunteering with Meals on Wheels during school holidays and becoming the first Junior Volunteer at the Stawell Inter Church Council welfare cottage. He has shown exceptional dedication to helping others. His leadership extends to organising youth events, working with the Stawell Entertainment Centre, and contributing to community events like the Stawell Community Carols and Grampians Multicultural Hub's Harmony Festival. His selflessness, passion, and leadership have made a lasting impact on our community.

Young Citizen of the Year - Xyrus Gragasin

Cr Jack Blake presents the second Young Citizen of the Year Award to Xyrus Gragasin.

Presented by Cr Blake, Xyrus Gragasin was nominated for being a dedicated member of local sporting groups, he has excelled in athletics, competing at Region and State Track and Field Championships with Stawell Little Athletics. This year, he reached new heights by placing 7th at the national level. He has also earned top finishes in Long Jump and Triple Jump at the State level. Beyond his personal achievements, he has inspired others by offering guidance and support to younger athletes, helping them build confidence and reach their potential. His leadership, kindness, and character make him a true asset to our community.
