Waste news and events

Northern Grampians Shire will keep you updated with the latest news and events we are supporting as we build a cleaner and more sustainable future. For now, simply watch this space for more updates over the coming months.

There are minimal changes to general rubbish, mixed recycling and FOGO collections over the Christmas and New Year period.

There will be no collections on Christmas Day, Thursday, December 25. These collections have moved to Boxing Day, Friday, December 26. Please ensure you put your bins out the night before as collection time may need to vary due to hot weather and limited landfill opening times over the holiday period.

There will be no interruptions to collections on New Year's Day, Thursday, January 1 and Australia Day, Monday, January 26, 2026.

If in doubt, you can check your bin collection date here.

Transfer stations will also be closed on Christmas Day and operate normal hours over the rest of the holiday period, except for Stawell Transfer Station which will also be closed on New Years Day.

Tips during the warmer months

  • Freeze smelly foods such as seafood and meat. They can then be placed in your bin the night before collection.

  • Break recycling items down to fit neatly into your bin.

  • Only put recyclable items in your recycling bins as contaminated bins will not be emptied.

  • Surplus waste and recycling can go to your nearest transfer station in Stawell, St Arnaud or Halls Gap.

The 2025 Waste and Recycling Services Survey ran between September 27 and October 15, 2025. Council received a strong response from our community, including survey submissions from both urban (compulsory) and rural (non-compulsory) areas.

We want to thank the local community for sharing their views, especially during an extended period of consultation following our four-year Council Plan engagement process.

We are now preparing an engagement report to summarise survey findings and inform council’s decisions on future waste services over the coming weeks.

Get involved in a Clean Up and make a difference!

Taking part in a Clean Up is a fun and easy way to connect with your
community while helping protect and care for our environment.

Northern Grampians Shire Council is supporting local groups who have registered with The Great Spring Clean Up by providing free deposits to local transfer stations for Windblown Litter ONLY.

Windblown litter, which are small items of litter that may have travelled by the wind such as food and beverage containers, paper, cardboard, bottles, cans and wrappers can be collected and deposited at the transfer station at no cost. Larger household, business and farm items such as but not limited to scrap metal, furniture, white goods and tyres are not included as part of the exemption.

Registered groups MUST apply for the transfer station exemption at least two weeks prior to clean up event. Please send requests to waste@ngshire.vic.gov.au

An exemption letter will be provided that MUST be presented to the attendants at the transfer stations on arrival.

How you can get involved:

1. Host a Clean Up: Register your own Clean Up Australia event and invite
friends, family, or colleagues to join. You’ll receive all the resources you need
to run a safe and successful event.

2. Join a Clean Up: Find an event near you and take part — it’s a great way to meet like-minded people and make an impact in your local area.
