Let's talk about BIG weather

Locals in and around St Arnaud are invited to take part in a community-wide conversation about how we can better respond to extreme weather events - and shape solutions that make sense for our region.

Let’s Talk About BIG Weather is an initiative led by Make a Change Australia, in partnership with council and other supporting organisations. It’s designed to bring residents, businesses, students, and community groups together to share experiences, spark ideas, and build stronger local responses to the impacts of heatwaves, fires, floods, and other extreme weather events.

This is a community-led initiative tailored specifically for Northern Grampians residents, focused on fostering bottom-up, locally relevant solutions. It’s also a first step in building stronger connections between locals, young people, and the organisations working on climate resilience and recovery.

Why it matters

Extreme weather is already having a lasting impact on homes, livelihoods, and the wellbeing of people in this region. After recent fires in our region and ongoing climate pressures, there’s a clear need to prepare for what’s next - and to do so together.

Young people are increasingly aware of these challenges yet are often left out of the conversation. This project aims to change that.

Young people have a vital role to play in shaping how our communities respond to climate-related challenges. They bring fresh ideas, lived experience, and are likely to have a strong interest in what the future holds. This project is about giving them a seat at the table and supporting their leadership so we can co-create local solutions that last.

Let’s Talk About BIG Weather will create a welcoming space for intergenerational conversations, practical advice, and real connections between those who care about the future of St Arnaud.

Get involved

There are two opportunities to get involved.

1) Community Event

All young people, residents, businesses, and community organisations in and around St Arnaud are invited to a free local gathering to hear from guest speakers, enjoy morning tea, and share ideas on how we can prepare, adapt, and recover more effectively.

When: Tuesday, June 24, 2025
Time: 11:00am to 12:30pm
Where: St Arnaud Secondary College, 8/24 Smith Street, St Arnaud

RSVPs are required for catering purposes. This event is part of a broader initiative to connect local experience with practical action, and to inspire greater participation from young people and emerging leaders across the region.

2) Community Survey

If you can’t make it to the event, you can still take part by sharing your views online. Community members are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences and ideas around extreme weather through a short online survey.

Feedback will help shape future programs and contribute to a growing network of locals working together on climate resilience and community wellbeing.
