Following on from the success of our Northern Gramps Girls Can campaign last year where council lit up exercise spaces in the early mornings, several of the shire’s sporting facilities are due to light up again in 2026. Between May 4 and September 30, spaces in Stawell and St Arnaud will light up from 6pm to 7.30pm on Monday and Wednesday evenings, and from 6am and 7am on Wednesday mornings.

Northern Grampians Shire will launch “Strength Through Adversity”, a booklet featuring autobiographical stories of resilience by shire elders for Seniors Week this week. The project is an initiative of council’s Positive Ageing team and aims to encourage the community to find inspiration and strength in the courageous lives of our elders as we live through the current Coronavirus Pandemic. The stories were submitted by some of our residents to the Positive Ageing team during winter and then compiled and designed as a keepsake booklet. The booklet forms part of a free goodies bag available from council offices in Stawell and St Arnaud from Tuesday 27 October. All residents carrying a valid senior’s card or equivalent identification will be eligible to receive a copy while stock lasts. Along with the Strength Through Adversity book, inside the bag seniors will find a drink bottle, a reusable face mask, a potted succulent cutting and home made biscuits. Northern Grampians Shire Council CEO, Liana Thompson said the booklet offers reassuring solace to the community that we can endure all manner of privation and still prevail. “The Strength Through Adversity booklet is the perfect way of gathering up the living history of the region and preserving it to pass on to future generations,” she said. “We are so impressed with the contributions from our seniors. Their stories really do tug at the heart strings and lift morale, reminding us that we can get through many challenges in life if we are courageous and stick at it. “I extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who took the time to contribute to this wonderful project.” The Positive Ageing Team will be at Stawell and St Arnaud customer service centres, in person, to hand out the book between 1.30 and 2.30 on Tuesday 27 October.
