Power outage

A power outage occurs when there is a short or long term interruption to your gas and/or electricity supply.

During a power outage you may need to think of new ways to continue bathing, eating and keeping cool, especially during the warmer months.

Prepare an emergency kit before a power outage occurs to help stay safe and connected with people outside of your home. Ensure your emergency kit has torches, spare batteries, a mobile phone and charger, a battery powered or wind-up radio and fresh water.

Stay safe during a blackout by:

  • Switching off electrical appliances.

  • Only opening your fridge and freezer doors when absolutely necessary.

  • Moving food from the fridge to the freezer.

  • Unplugging ‘surge-sensitive’ equipment such as computers and laptop devices.

  • Keeping one light switched on so you know when the power returns.

  • Limiting water usage to prevent overloading power-dependent wastewater systems.

  • Signing up for text message updates from your electricity provider.

  • Turning on a battery-operated radio and listening to a local radio station for information.

  • Checking the power outage map via powercor.com.au/power-outages-andemergencies/live-outage-map.

  • Checking on your neighbours to see if they need assistance, particularly if they are elderly or have a disability.
