How council advocates

Advocacy takes a range of forms, including methods such as submissions, meetings, direct lobbying, letters, campaigns and forums. Advocacy will be undertaken by council officers, the executive team and councillors as appropriate.

 

Submissions and letters

Through direct and formal channels to Members of Parliament, state and federal ministers, and shadow ministers. Includes funding submissions and submissions in response to engagement processes and inquiries.

Meetings

Sitting down and discussing the issues and priorities, including with Members of Parliament.

Public awareness, media and campaigns

Using council communications to provide information, publish updates and support transparency on priority matters, including where community consultation or participation is required.

Platforms and networks

Engaging with relevant regional forums, peak bodies and networks to support coordinated messaging and strengthen council’s evidence base and partnerships.

Community engagement

Engaging with the community to understand impacts and priorities, and to inform council’s submissions and engagement with government.

Grant applications

Identifying and pursuing relevant funding opportunities to progress council priorities, including preparation of supporting business cases, project plans and co-contribution information where required.

Partnerships

Aligning our advocacy with other councils, organisations, community and peak bodies.

Existing partnerships

Councillors and council staff also represent the community through a range of peak bodies, alliances, groups and memberships. Through our representation, we ensure that our community’s needs are included in the development of regional plans and strategies, advocacy, and government policy and priorities.
