Get prepared

It's important you understand the type and severity of emergency risk you face at your property and in your location.

The first 72 hours after an emergency or disaster event are the most critical for survival and recovery. Following the below advice will ensure you are adequately prepared should you find yourself in such event.

Know your risk level

Understanding the different types of emergency events and their potential impact to you and your property is the first step. Find out more about the following types of emergency events via the links below.

Make a plan

Collating an emergency plan is critical to surviving an emergency event and could save your life. Areas to consider when writing your plan include:

  • What emergency event is your plan for? Fire, flood, storm etc.
  • Who needs to be considered in your plan? Do you need to consider immediate family, neighbours, or short-term lodgers who may not live in the same house as you?
  • Who is your emergency contact? Who can you reach out to in an emergency situation for help?
  • Where will you go if you have to leave home? Do you have family or friends nearby? Do you need to book a place to stay?
  • Where do you get your information from? Do you know what websites to visit, or apps to download, or what radio stations to listen to?
  • How will you evacuate or travel somewhere safer? Will you drive yourself or will you get a lift with someone?
