Council Advocacy | Renewable Projects

Council is committed to advocating for all members of our community. It is acknowledged that our community's views on the various renewable energy projects are diverse and not always aligned. The information below outlines the advocacy work council has undertaken over the past several months. 

 

November 2025

November 5, 2025 - Submission

Council made a joint submission to VicGrid on the proposed new Victorian Access Regime alongside Horsham Rural City Council, Buloke Shire Council and Yarriambiack Shire Council.

October 29, 2025 - Meeting

Council Officers attended the Northern Grampians Shire Council portion of the Western Renewables Link Inquiry and Advisory Committee Site Visit. Officers pointed out road and traffic concerns that were identified in council's submission to the Western Renewables Link Environmental Effect Statement.

September 29, 2025 – Letter

Council wrote to the Minister for Planning raising concerns with the consideration of the Watta Wella Windfarm and Battery under the Development Facilitation Program.

July 21, 2025 - Meeting

Council passes Notice of Motion at the July 21, 2025 council meeting. The Notice of Motion is “That council opposes the introduction of the proposed Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) for the Northern Grampians Shire region and continues to: 

  • Advocate against the introduction of a Renewable Energy Zone in its current form, which encompasses extensive areas of prime farming land; and
  •  Advocate for the rights of occupants to be in charge of their own destiny”.

Council passes a Notice of Motion at the June 2, 2025 council meeting. The Notice of Motion is “That Council does not support the State Government’s VNI West project in its current form and will continue to: 

  • Advocate to the State Government for an alternative to the VNI West project; 
  •  Bring to the attention of the Government their responsibilities under the Paris Agreement, where it specifically protects farming land from alternative energy projects; and 
  • Strongly advocate to the State Government on the importance of food security in Victoria and the wellbeing and mental health of our community."

April 29, 2025 – Media Release

Council withdraws from a five-council alliance created to collectively advocate to State Government on issues including transmission lines, renewable energy and mining.
