Northern Grampians Shire Council in consultation with CFA Victoria, will start fuel reduction work within the shire from Saturday 1 May commencing with Old Lake Oval in Sutherland Street, Stawell.

The fuel reduction works are an essential activity in preparation for next summer’s fire danger period to mitigate against fire risk for the local community.

The Old Lake Oval work will be carried out by Warren Earthworks and will involve clearing of identified fire fuel. Hand and machine clearing will take place; onsite mulchers, chainsaws, woodchippers and heavy vehicles will be in operation at the site.

The general public should anticipate disruptive machinery noise during business hours and avoid the area where possible. Residents may use this site for recreation but must observe the signage in place and use caution when walking through the area. Pet owners must keep their animals on leash at all times.

The work is scheduled to cease on 14 May. If delays occur or further work is required the public will be notified via our social media channels and website.

Further fuel reduction activity is scheduled in June for Halls Gap and notice of this activity will be issued in due course.

Northern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Cr Murray Emerson, advised the community to be patient with this important fire fuel clearing work. “As the community knows, we cannot understate preparedness when it comes to the fire danger period in our shire,” he said.

“I encourage all users of Old Lake Oval to find alternative locations for their recreation where possible, in order to give our contractors a wide berth so that this work is completed with minimum disruption.” Further information can be obtained from www.ngshire.vic.gov.au/fire or by contacting 03 5358 8700.
