We all know Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love, but for our libraries staff, it has an additional layer of meaning.

February 14 is Library Lovers Day, a time to celebrate the vital role libraries play in our lives and our communities.

Northern Grampians Shire mayor Karen Hyslop is asking residents to consider ways the municipality’s libraries have enriched their lives, big or small.

“Perhaps it’s the quiet space that lets you unwind with a good book, or the helpful librarian who’s always ready to lend a hand?” she said.

“Maybe it’s the opportunity to access resources and services that go beyond the pages of a book. No matter how you experience it, libraries offer something unique that no other public service or space can quite replicate.”

Cr Hyslop said whether someone was a regular visitor to Stawell or St Arnaud branches, or had not had a chance to explore recently, Library Lovers Day offered a ‘perfect excuse’ to rediscover what local libraries had to offer.

“This year, we're putting the spotlight on you, our valued library users who are our greatest advocates,” she said.

“In turn, we encourage you to share your library stories with friends, family and across your networks.

“Tell someone about the library you love, and make sure to call in and let us know, too.”

Cr Hyslop said the Northern Grampians Libraries team was more than happy to help people explore the vast range of services available.

“Sure, our libraries have a fantastic selection of books - new releases, large print editions, and a delightful collection for children. But did you know our branches offer so much more than just books?,” she said.

“Our libraries are your mobile office, providing a space for free wi-fi, access to public computers, printing, photocopying, scanning, faxing, laminating and even bookbinding.

“Need help with your device? Whether it’s your phone, tablet or laptop, our library staff is here to guide you through how to make the most of your tech.”

Stawell and St Arnaud branches also offer a rich array of eResources, including Borrowbox (for audio books and eBooks), Libby (for digital magazines) and Kanopy (for streaming movies).

“The digital world is at your fingertips, and Northern Grampians Libraries staff is here to help you navigate it,” Cr Hyslop said.

Northern Grampians Libraries also offers a variety of events and programs designed to bring people together, including weekly Storytime, school visits, holiday activities and social groups.

Staff even provide home library deliveries for people unable to make it to a branch in person.

“For those in need of a quiet space to work, meet with friends or attend a meeting, our Stawell library offers bookable meeting rooms, while St Arnaud features a selection of board games and jigsaws for socialising,” Cr Hyslop said.

“Our libraries offer a space for connection, relaxation and inspiration. Libraries are at the heart of our community, offering more than just a place to read – they are a hub for learning, creativity and connection.

“So, this Library Lovers Day, take a moment to visit the library, explore what’s on offer and find out how your local library can benefit you.”
