Northern Grampians Shire Council has been successful in gaining a Federal Government Black Spot Program grant of around $1.8M to undertake road safety improvements on Sloane Street, Stawell.

Northern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Cr Kevin Erwin said, “We have a significant number of vehicle accidents on Sloane Street and this funding will make a substantial difference to residents, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists in the Sloane Street area.

“The planned work is extensive and includes improved kerbing, new bicycle lanes, two new roundabouts, road widening, speed reduction, and improved pedestrian facilities.

‘Visibility will be better; pedestrians and cyclists will be safer and motorists will slow down.”

Extension of the kerbs at the intersections at Sloane and Patrick Streets, Sloane and Maud Streets, and Sloane and Wakeham Streets will enhance visibility. Patrick and Wakeham Streets will also see improved pedestrian facilities and the introduction of bicycle lanes.

New roundabouts will be installed at the Shirreff and Sloane Street intersection and the Cooper Street intersection. This work includes a median island installed in Dawson Street, preventing vehicles from turning right out of Dawson Street into Sloane Street.

There will be improved pedestrian facilities, along with kerb extensions and bicycle lanes installed at the Sloane and Brown Streets intersection.

The road will be widened to accommodate bicycle lanes on both sides of Sloane Street between Western Highway and Cooper Street and speed will be reduced from 60kh to 50kh between Patrick Street and Cooper Street. The remainder of the street to Western Highway will stay at 60kh for now and be reassessed once housing development in the area is completed.

“These projects will not just reduce the incidence of vehicle accidents in our shire, they will provide new opportunities for greater health benefits with improved pedestrian facilities and the introduction of bicycle lanes. We look forward to enjoying these improvements which will commence early 2024 and be completed by the end of 2024,” said Cr Erwin.
