Councillor Matters | Cr Jack Blake, February 20, 2026

This is my first councillor column for 2026 and I’m excited for the year ahead. Unfortunately, my year hasn’t gotten off to the greatest start. Due to being unwell, I was unable to make the Australia Day celebrations, however, I was thrilled to hear it was an amazing day and I congratulate all the award winners, nominees and our new Australian citizens.
We are so lucky to have such amazing people in our community. After speaking to a few worthy winners via messages after the celebrations, I was so moved by an email I received from Allen Blight. Until recently, Mr Blight had spent the best part of 20-odd years in the Stawell SES and he was so overjoyed with the recognition the unit received. I could tell how emotional he was by the words he wrote, explaining how proud all the past members would be with the Community Group of the Year award.
Showing gratitude towards our day-to-day heroes or acknowledging the amazing work our community individuals and groups do should not stop the moment the barbecue is packed away and the speeches have been read out - it should be constantly in our minds that a great community is only made great by the input of great people.
I was very disappointed recently to read negative comments on social media regarding a range of topics such as Christmas decorations and activities over Australia Day. Rather than criticising councillors, I think some people should refer to my previous statement about great communities being made by great people - perhaps a few more people could consider how they could help make our community great with some real input.
Councils work better when the community works alongside them. As we have made clear, we are operating in a rate-capped environment and trying to do our best to provide quality services, facilities and infrastructure within our budget. I understand that it can still be difficult for some people to understand why council does not always prioritise what we ‘want’ over what we ‘need’ – we are honestly trying our best to deliver for our community.
Now that I am back to full health, I look forward to being proactive and working hard for our community. Thanks to my fellow councillors for picking up my workload while I have been sick, along with council staff and managers. Everyone has been so supportive, and I am grateful to be part of such a fantastic team.
On another note, I would like to wish the Careys of Careys Covers a happy retirement. It is a great loss to the town, however the service they have provided for many, many years has been much appreciated.
