Councillors for the new Northern Grampians Shire Council took the Oath/Affirmation of Office at the Statutory Council meeting at 6pm on Monday 9 November 2020. A person elected to be a Councillor is not capable of acting as a Councillor until they have taken the oath or affirmation. The Chief Executive Officer, Ms Liana Thompson, informed the meeting that successful candidate for the Kara Kara Ward, Karen Hyslop, had tendered her resignation from the Northern Grampians Shire Council earlier in the day and was not in attendance at the meeting. As per the Local Government Act 2020 the Chief Executive Officer must inform the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) and the Minister for Local Government within three days of a councillor’s resignation. Ms Thompson wrote to the Minister for Local Government and the VEC the same day to inform them of Ms Hyslop’s resignation. Following the meeting, Ms Thompson thanked Ms Hyslop, who was first elected to the Northern Grampians Shire Council in October 2012, for her time with the Northern Grampians Shire Council. “We are very grateful for the years of service Ms Hyslop has given to the communities of our shire and the dedication she has shown in her efforts to improve the lives of the people of our region,” she said. “She will be missed in the council chambers but we wish her all the best for her future endeavours and hope she continues to play an active and important role in the future of our shire.” The resignation of Ms Hyslop will trigger a by-election in the Kara Kara Ward with a date to be determined by the VEC in the coming days.
