Glendemar is 15km SE of Marnoo and 45 km SW of St Arnaud, on the eastern edge of the Wimmera plains. It is a 2226ha grazing property of mixed gravelly to heavy soils with native and introduced pastures and rainfall of 425mm. We run 2800 breeding ewes.
Glendemar has been at the leading edge of early adoption of new technology within the sheep industry. Since 2000 Glendemar has undertaken large AI and ET programs, introduced Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBV’s) to all animals and implemented and developed a fully automated electronic identification system. We have introduced DNA testing of all sires and young ram lambs at three months of age. With the use of sheep genomics we are focusing in on hard to measure traits such as sheep meat eating quality along with internal parasite resistance and resilience. Genomics also allows us to measure rams at a very young age for key traits such as growth, muscle, fat and wool, with very high accuracy.
Along with this technology we have also introduced new management systems such as Life Time Ewe Management (LTEM), Higher Performance Weaner (HPW) programs and Pedigree Matchmaker. We have adjusted ewe lamb joinings, shortened joining times and now yard wean lambs.
We have a well-defined breeding objective that focuses on the main production traits of Merino sheep. Our focus on growth, muscle and fat has lead to the majority of our animals to be in the top 10% in each of these traits. These traits lead to faster growing animals, with high lamb conception rates, but more importantly high survival rates, especially under harsh climatic conditions. These traits also help in resilience of internal parasites and have positive correlations to meat eating quality. Our focus for wool is for as much quantity and quality without affecting reproduction and carcass traits. We are looking for a highly efficient maternal ewe, that gives maximum production under commercial stocking rates.
We ceased mulesing in 2004 and our animal’s are plain body and easy care with minimal chemical required.
