The Biggest Science Experiment has launched in Stawell thanks to a partnership between Northern Grampians Shire Council, WAMA, and the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory (SUPL).
The first exp[erment launched today in Shop 108 in Stawell’s Main Street where event organisers Dr Anthea Nicholls and Dennis Crawford are conducting a scientific survey of local fauna - they will be back on and Saturday 29 February to be sure to pop in and check it out.
The Biggest Science Experiment is a community science project bringing people together to think, talk, and get involved in doing science in the Northern Grampians Region.
Adults, kids, schools, families, businesses, groups and organisations are invited to participate in the program with science experiments to be featured in an expo on 4 and 5 May at the Stawell Town Hall.
Experiments or projects can be run any time between March and May and can involve any kind of science including mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry, statistics, data, or anything you can think of!
If you want to be involved but are stuck for science-based ideas, check out the Biggest Science Experiment Website for a great list of ways to get involved or to register your experiment.
“We really want to get people thinking about science and how it is involved in our everyday lives,” said Dr Anthea Nicholls WAMA Education Lead and BigSciExp project manager.
“Stawell is about to land on the international science map with a number of science-based projects happening in our region and we find it important to support these projects in getting the community behind science with The Biggest Science Experiment.”
The expo will open at 6pm on 4 May with a presentation at 7pm by Professor Jeremy Mould from SUPL and with a full expo program to be announced in the coming weeks.
Northern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Murray Emerson, said he is excited to see what experiments the community come up with.
“The Northern Grampians Shire is set to be the centre of the scientific universe in coming years and what better way to celebrate that than with experimentation?” he said.
“Science presents us with endless possibilities for learning and exploration so I can’t wait to see the interesting ways the community chooses to get involved in this big project.”
The Biggest Science Experiment has been made possible with a $5,000 grant through round one of council’s community grants program.
Round two of the program is now open and taking applications. Apply online here.
