Walkers Lake receiving top up water supply, new Advisory Group members appointed

Grampians Wimmera Mallee (GWM) Water have begun topping up the water supply of Walkers Lake near St Arnaud.

The recreation lake is a popular destination for both community members and tourists alike, with 200 megalitres set to be pumped into the lake ahead of the warmer months.

Councillor Tony Driscoll, Mayor of Northern Grampians Shire Council said, “Obviously they like to do the top up of the water supply in the cooler months when there's not so much demand on the system, which means that it will be at a reasonable and usable level for the summer months.”

“We’re once again looking forward to the great amenity that Walkers Lake is in providing for our community and our region during those high usage times.”

In addition to the top up, the Walkers Lake Advisory Group has appointed Chad Frost, Austin Freeman, and Stephen Jesse to the group as community members, and VR Fish, Landcare, Dja Dja Wurrung and the St Arnaud Secondary College as organisations.

The Group are now working through appointing a consultant to help construct a development and management plan for Walkers Lake.

Representing St Arnaud Secondary College and its students on the Group, Principal Tony Hand said, “Walkers Lake has fantastic potential as a learning opportunity for students in a variety of manners.”

“We want to make it a place that the education community and community as a whole can really enjoy and get the most out of.”
