Council statement regarding 2019 Stawell Gift prize money

On Thursday 31 January, Northern Grampians Shire Council made an offer to the Stawell Athletic Club which could see the prize money for the 2019 Stawell Gift maintained.

That offer is unfortunately still pending, as significant work still needs to be done to formalise a contract.

However, from a Council perspective it’s disappointing that conversations have commenced around a possible reduction in prize money for the event.

While major sponsorship for the Stawell Gift is undoubtedly hard to find, and has been for a number of years, we believe the offer made to the Stawell Athletic Club secures the longevity of the event for the Stawell and surrounding community well into the future.

Councillor Kevin Erwin, Mayor of Northern Grampians Shire Council said, “There is no question the Stawell Gift provides a tremendous economic boost to the Stawell community and wider region.”

“Council is working closely with the Stawell Athletic Club in an attempt to protect the prestige of the event, but we are all acutely aware of the pressures associated with conducting a major event on the global athletics calendar.”
