The art of gathering for the common good

An exciting exhibition opening this Sunday 3 October and featuring the works of 10 local artists, demonstrates how the art of gathering for the common good is alive and well in spite of Covid-19 in the North Central Victorian town of St Arnaud.

Melbourne’s ongoing lockdown has prevented a prestigious touring exhibition from being delivered to the St Arnaud Raillery Hub Inc (RHI) Gallery, situated in the town’s heritage listed railway station.

The RHI’s committee was subsequently faced with the prospect of having nothing to adorn the heritage listed station’s walls and floors, and not reopen when regional lockdowns ended.

However, a handful of local artists enthusiastically responded to their plight; quickly took up a collection, finished off works they had in progress, or were inspired to create new ones.

The artists include: Richard Bazeley, Don, Leah, Jake and Jasmine Berry, Judith Church, Jenny McClelland, Lyn Robinson, William Pout and Peter Tanczos.

Their works comprise handcrafted chairs and sculptured timber vessels from reclaimed timbers, hand painted ceramics, and artworks in acrylic, oil, graphite, gouache, charcoal, pastel, water colour and textile.

Val Wilkinson, an experienced curator from a neighboring town, and a loyal band of local volunteers, also helped to bring the colorful and diverse collection to fruition in a matter of days.

The result is quite inspirational and highlights the value of art in bringing communities together.

Since opening in September 2019, the RHI Gallery and Market has provided a space for creatives in the region to promote and retail their arts, crafts and produce.

It has evolved into a meeting place for emerging and professional artists to share skills, attend professional development workshops, and meet socially whilst working on their own projects.

The Hub, located in Queens Avenue, adds to the town’s significant tourist drawcards including Silo Art and street art by local artist, Kyle Torney, mosaics, gold mining and heritage sites.

The St Arnaud Artists’ Exhibition is available for viewing Friday to Sunday 11am-4pm, until 7 November.
