An exciting new studio ceramic exhibition opened at the St Arnaud Railway Station Gallery on Friday 11 June, presenting the works of nine professional, multi-award winning and newly established artists from central and regional Victoria.

The featured artists from Avoca, Daylesford, Halls Gap, Deep Lead, Malmsbury and Smythe’s Creek included: Trina Ambrose, Minna Graham, Judy Hilbig, Amelia Kingston, Desiree Radi Mansbridge, Ruby Pilven, Marina Pribaz, Petrus Spronk and Sarah Taylor.

This is the first exclusive ceramic exhibition for the gallery, having spent intermittent periods of closure due to Covid-19 restrictions since it opened in September 2019.

The auxiliary gallery will also feature ceramics from local private collections (for display only) sourced from Australia and overseas.

Throughout history ceramic objects have always been coveted commodities and highly valued by private collectors.

It is one of the oldest known artforms, dating back to 26,000 BC.

Ceramic art has stood the test of time – it isn't just trendy, the more time that passes the more value it gains.

Ceramics provide anthropologists with a window to past customs and cultures of another time by studying the techniques, styles and materials used to create and fire the objects.

Generally made by taking mixtures of clay, earthen elements, powders and water and shaping them into desired forms, clay has been used for many purposes: as a necessity such as a bowl, an ornament, artifact, jewel, décor item, or formed as an object of worship.

Just like every other style, each ceramics artist sets their own artistic approach and specific language that addresses the public the way they want it to speak to the audience and the works presented in this exhibition are no exception.

The exhibition is available to view until 23 August 2021. The Gallery is open Fridays through to Mondays from 11am - 4pm.
