The Wimmera Street Roundabout Art Project is a public art project which will upgrade the roundabout at the intersection of Main and Wimmera Streets, Stawell, to ensure it is both visually attractive and expresses the unique attributes of Stawell as a community.
Council recognises the significant role which public art plays in reflecting the evolution of our community culture, as well as providing a unique experience and expressing the identity of our community.
Public art connects people with landscape and facilitates a dialogue between residents and visitors about our community values, as well celebrating through creativity the unique characteristics of our community’s history, present-day attributes and future aspirations.
Public art has a pivotal role in increasing the liveability and desirability of the municipality, which in turn has long term economic benefits to the region.
The purpose of the Wimmera Street Roundabout Art Project is to:
provide creative expression of the history, culture, fabric and future aspirations of the Stawell community
contribute to the vibrancy of the public space for the enjoyment of residents and visitors
enhance and communicate the identity of our community through creative expression
enrich the region's arts and culture lifestyle
In collaboration with Swinburne University of Technology Masters of Design students, the Wimmera Street Roundabout Art Project Advisory Panel will facilitate community participation in co-designing the final centrepiece for the roundabout.
