Heatwaves occur when there are several consecutive days of above-average temperatures, often combined with high humidity. Extreme heat can affect the health of humans and animals, leading to serious or even fatal consequences.

Heatwave Mitigation Plan

With the frequency and intensity of heatwaves in Victoria expected to increase, Council has developed a Heatwave Mitigation Plan to minimise the harmful effects of extreme heat on the health and well-being of residents. The plan identifies vulnerable persons living in the Northern Grampians Shire and aims to raise awareness of the dangers posed by heatwaves. The plan is currently under review.

Council receives information directly from the Department of Health & Human Services when a heatwave is a forecast. In the event of extreme weather conditions, community facilities may be made available to provide residents with relief from the heat. Details of these locations will be communicated through the media.
