Moving Mountains

Moving Mountains, funded by FRRR's ABC Heywire Youth Innovation Grants,  aims to provide an interactive and insightful mental health workshop to students around the Northern Grampians Shire. Moving Mountains is about the obstacles that rural young Australians face when dealing with mental health issues and aims to show students where to get help locally, and reduce the stigma associated around mental health.

Moving Mountains workshops will be designed and delivered by the YAC and will target levels 6, 8, 10 and 12. The workshop will be accompanied by a teacher resource created by fourth year education students from Federation University which intends to assist teachers when teaching about mental health in their classrooms. The resource will include local support places, how and why to teach mental health, as well as a range of lessons and activities to implement.

Another component of the project is mental health first aid training for the broader community. Research by the YAC has shown that young people strongly believe that it is important for their parents, friends, sport coaches and the like to also be aware of what mental health is and how to help someone seek help if they believe they may be experiencing problems.

Youth Strategy

The YAC recently launched Council's first ever Youth Strategy. It has been a long time since Council had a Youth Strategy and the YAC hopes that this document will assist Council in considering the needs of the shire's young people in their decision making.

The Youth Strategy focuses around four key priorities:

  • Recreation and events
  • Health, safety and wellbeing
  • Education and employment
  • Leadership and community connections
