Dog off leash areas and requirements

Off leash areas for dogs offer the freedom of running without constraint, allowing them to play, sniff, chase, roll and romp to their heart's content. Many problems such as digging and barking arise because dogs are restless and bored. Often, these problems can be solved by simply allowing dogs more exercise.

For dog owners, these areas are located at North Park Precinct and Old Lake Oval, Stawell and King Georges Park, St Arnaud. These spaces offer a great chance to get some exercise, contribute to your own health and wellbeing, and meet other dog owners.

Please keep in mind when exercising your dog in an off leash area, dog owners must:

  • Remain within voice or hand control distance of your dog at all times and ensure the dog is within sight.
  • Carry a bag or similar device to remove and dispose of your dog's waste. Failure to do so may lead to fines being issued.
  • Not allow your dog off leash if it doesn't respond to your call.
  • Stop your dog from being a nuisance or aggressive towards other dogs, people, or wildlife.
  • Not allow your dog to interfere with the enjoyment of other people or dogs using the area, not everyone may be comfortable in the presence of dogs.
  • Not allow your dog to run on turf cricket pitches.
  • Ensure your dog is microchipped, registered, and vaccinated.
  • Carry a leash at all times and use as required.

You must remember to put your dog on a leash if it is within 10 metres of any:

  • public children's play area
  • public BBQ or outdoor eating area
  • business premises
  • organised event
