Scientists from Australia’s leading universities, Stawell Gold Mine management, and the Northern Grampians Shire Council have been working collaboratively since 2013 to design a facility of international significance. The Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory (SUPL) brings together the best of the world’s scientific minds, engineering excellence, and public sector governance and support to make this high technology dream a reality.
The SABRE experiment is a joint endeavour between SUPL and the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN, Italy). The Italian Gran Sasso Laboratory will host the twin experiment to SABRE and is the largest underground physics laboratory in the world employing over 200 particle physicists.
To date, the State Government of Victoria and Federal Governments have provided $1.75m each for the design and construction of the laboratory. The project is being managed by Northern Grampians Shire Council.
