St Arnaud playground set for shade sail protection

St Arnaud’s Market Square playground will be protected from the sun this summer thanks to a grant of more than $40,000 from the Victorian Government’s Community Shade Grants Program.

A large portion of the popular play space will be protected from harmful UV rays by a large shade sail, set to erected in December this year, after Northern Grampians Shire Council was successful in its application for a $44,700 slice of funding from the Department of Health and Human Services.

A 20 metre x 14 metre sail will protect the section of the playground intended for younger children, and is likely to be installed by the end of December this year, providing year-round protection from harsh sunlight.

Northern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Cr Tony Driscoll, said protection from the sun is of the utmost importance as summer approaches, particularly for young children.

“We know that Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and that’s why we’re ensuring that we offer adequate protection to our youngest residents,” Cr Driscoll said.

“Every year, there are around 750,000 skin cancers treated in Australia, which equates to more than 2000 skin cancer treatments per day - the last thing we want is for one of our young people to become a part of those statistics.

“Our children are the future of this region, and this Council is committed to ensuring that they prosper and receive the safest and best start to their lives possible.”
