The former service station site in Stawell’s Main Street will be transformed into a multi-purpose space aimed at hosting a range of community events, with the project set to be delivered by Easter 2018.

The plans for the site’s redevelopment were finalised last week, and showcase open grassed areas, shade provided by an urban forest, seating and a shade structure, split over three distinct tiers and intersected by a paved pathway. The site will have full access to both power and water, including drinking stations, opening the space up to possible uses including markets, food festivals, live music and more, particularly during major events such as the Stawell Easter festival and Christmas.

Northern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Cr Tony Driscoll said the site’s redevelopment had been a major focus of Council since it acquired the site in October 2017.

“This site obviously sits in a key location within the Stawell CBD, and Council felt it was simply unacceptable for what was frankly an eyesore to be located in such a high-traffic area,” Cr Driscoll said.

“These plans give a clear indication of the improvement that this project will deliver to Stawell’s main streetscape, and what an asset this area will be to the entire community,” Cr Driscoll said.

Owing to the site’s past as a service station, potential uses for the site are limited, but Cr Driscoll said Council was satisfied it had decided upon the best possible use.

Council held a community consultation session in December 2017, providing a focus group of community members with draft plans and inviting feedback, which has been utilised to develop the final plan.

“The feedback we received during the consultation process was integral in assisting to shape what Council feels is an outcome which benefits the entire community,” Cr Driscoll said.

Cr Driscoll said the project’s timeline had been advanced as a key focus in order to deliver a completed outcome by Easter 2018.

“We look forward to being able to showcase the final product to locals and visitors alike when the town comes alive for the Stawell Easter Festival.”

A fully detailed plan of the site is available to view at Council’s offices, while a copy of the plan will also be available on-site once works commence within coming weeks.
