Leisure shift set to deliver savings

Northern Grampians Shire Council’s new approach to health and fitness operations at the Stawell Leisure Centre will deliver ratepayers a projected savings of $500,000 over a 10-year period, allowing Council to invest those funds in vital infrastructure and assets maintenance.
Following ratepayer feedback which outlined a desire for a stronger, more vibrant leisure offering in Stawell, a complete service review of the SLC’s operations illustrated an opportunity for Council to take on the running of the SLC’s health and fitness facility, thereby saving ratepayers around $70,000 per year by no longer subsidising the previous service.
With a detailed business plan in place, alongside new equipment, new classes and new staff, the SLC will be further reinvigorated with a complete rebranding, which is set to be unveiled following Council’s next meeting on Monday, 5 February.
Northern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Cr Tony Driscoll said that while some ratepayers may have expressed concern over Council adopting a more commercial approach to the SLC’s operations, the new model would deliver increased savings and value for ratepayers well into the future.
“This is the whole purpose of our service reviews - to conduct a thorough examination of all of our 42 services and identify areas where we can save money, before reinvesting those funds in much-needed infrastructure and asset maintenance and upgrades,” Cr Driscoll said.
“The value of this process is already evident in pinpointing the SLC as an area where we can not only deliver major savings to ratepayers, but also offer the people of Stawell a world-class health and fitness facility.
“We considered all options in regards to the provision of leisure services for the community, including closure, and the option we selected provides great outcomes and a significant saving simply by approaching it as a commercial business and working to a strict business plan”
If membership sales are anything go by, it appears locals are already enjoying NGSC’s new approach, with only a handful of reduced price memberships offered to the first 100 new members remaining.
