Stawell’s famed Central Park precinct is set for an expansion following Northern Grampians Shire Council’s successful purchase of the former Waites Robson Stonemasons site.

The parcel of land, located at 2-8 Main Street, Stawell, adjoins Central Park and will form a multipurpose space, with Council’s Infrastructure department working alongside landscape architects to develop a plan for the site’s usage. The site was originally identified as a key area in NGSC’s 2000 Central Park Masterplan.

Where appropriate, existing infrastructure on the site will be repurposed to cut down on total expenditure.

Northern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Tony Driscoll, said the expansion would add to Central Park’s attraction and ability to host major events, such as the Stawell Gift.

“The opportunity to add to Central Park’s already outstanding reputation as one of regional Victoria’s most impressive recreation facilities is an exciting one,” Cr Driscoll said.

“Each year, thousands of people visit the Central Park precinct for the Stawell Gift and other major events, and this expansion will only boost the precinct’s attraction.

“Functionality and the needs and wants of the wider Northern Grampians Shire community will be at the forefront of our planning and vision for this site, and we will ensure that our plans meet those criteria.

“The acquisition of this land has been a long-term strategic objective of Council, and one that we think is the final piece in the puzzle when it comes our vision for Central Park.”
