Local business owners will be invited to take the first step towards assisting to develop a more vibrant and sustainable retail sector within the Northern Grampians Shire next week.

As part of Council’s Revitalise! Project - a large-scale initiative aimed at improving the vibrancy and raising the profile of Stawell and St Arnaud with a particular focus on retail and the main streets in these towns - one of Australia’s leading retail consultants, Brian Walker, CEO of The Retail Doctor Group, will visit local businesses in both Stawell and St Arnaud to speak with retailers.

The feedback generated by these business visits will form a major part of an independent expert report addressing retail strengths and weaknesses within the Shire.

Brian will also provide independent retail expertise to retailers in order assist them to improve their business performance including presentation, sales and operating profits at Fit for Business sessions in St Arnaud and Stawell on April 18 and 19 respectively, while he will also deliver a talk on the future of retail in Stawell on April 20, using insights from domestic and global retail markets on what the future hold for retail and how businesses can stay relevant.

Northern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Cr Tony Driscoll, said the process was integral in helping to establish a roadmap for the future of local businesses.

“This process is about reviewing what is currently on offer in the main trading areas of both St Arnaud and Stawell, benchmarking that offering against high-performing retail strips of a similar size and demographic, and coming up with evidence-based recommendations and actions for us to take together as a community,” Cr Driscoll said.

“A strong retail and business sector is crucial for the future of our region, and Council is passionate about working with the relevant stakeholders in order to ensure that our businesses stay up to speed with the latest retail trends.”

Other local government organisations have provided strong endorsements of Brian’s services, including the Collins Street Retail group, a not-for-profit association funded by the City of Melbourne in order to represent retailers in one of Australia’s busiest retail precincts.

“The response to Brian’s presentations has been excellent with our attendees booking for the first breakfast and each breakfast thereafter. Our numbers at the breakfasts have grown to the point that individuals are now booking tables and bringing a lot more of their staff,” Collins Street Precinct coordinator Tracey Smith said.

We would highly recommend Brian Walker, The Retail Doctor as he has certainly assisted many of our attendees to be “fit” in business with a fantastic and interactive presentation  given them all something to take back to their businesses and implement.”
