Safer Teen Parties (15-Oct-2009)

A discussion between teens, parents and experts will be held on October 27th to help plan teen parties, avoiding binge drinking and associated violence and damage.

CEO of Drink Wise Australia, Chris Watters, will speak on the night, supported by other local experts from a variety of fields.

The event has been organised through a partnership between the Northern Grampians Shire, LenZone, Victoria Police and Grampians Community Health to educate parents and their teens, as well as wider community members and organisations, on the dangers and effects of alcohol in response to widespread community concern surrounding the issue.

The presentation will follow a performance by Melbourne theatre group Phunktional at Stawell Secondary College earlier that day. Phunktional will present their play Love Drunk to year 10 and 11 students at the school.

Leading Senior Constable, Paul Kelly, said attendance at the session would be highly beneficial to parents and their teens as well as general community members who are concerned about the issue of teen binge drinking

“As well as providing important information on binge drinking, the session will assist parents in opening the lines of communication with their teens so that the issue can be openly discussed”.

“The session also aims to provide information to make informed choices and find practical solutions to issues that parents are facing with regards to young people and alcohol”, he said.

The event will be held at the Central Park clubrooms on Tuesday October 27th from 7-9pm, is free of charge and all are welcome
