The Northern Grampians Shire Council is urging residents to reduce excessive vegetation and accumulated materials on properties. The fire season is only weeks away and is forecast to be severe.
Officers will begin inspecting properties in October. The Shire will use its enforcement powers to reduce the risk to neighbours of excessive fire fuel. Residents are urged to begin cleaning up their properties now to avoid fines.
Mayor Kevin Erwin said the move was necessary to reduce fire risk given predictions of another high-danger fire season ahead.
“Recent rains are producing high vegetation growth rates so it will be important for our residents to keep on top of the growth on their land”.
“We also want to make sure that any unnecessary materials which have accumulated on properties are cleared. Not only is it unsightly, but it poses a high fire risk”, Mayor Erwin said.
Officers will issue Notices to Comply to any noncompliant properties which will give the owner or occupant a specified time to reduce vegetation or material. Failure to do so may result in the specified work being conducted on the resident’s behalf and at their cost.
Those who are noncompliant may also receive an infringement notice.
Any enquiries should be directed to Council’s Local Laws department on 5358 8700.
