A warm season, drought-tolerant grass is currently being installed by Northern Grampians Shire Council parks and gardens staff at North Park to ensure the ground is retained as a usable playing surface.
Water from the Moonlight dams will be used to irrigate the ground and bring it up to par for future recreational use.
This process, combined with the use of harvested storm water, continues a long line of water saving initiatives by Council, ensuring the safety and usability of the shire’s sport and recreation areas that have been affected by climate change.
Councillor Barry Marrow said whilst the conversion would see the ground closed over summer, the eventual result would be pleasing.
He said Council had consulted with the Grampians Cricket Association who are happy to see the conversion go ahead and have made alternative arrangements for their season.
“This process is going to make North Park a great playing surface for future football and cricket seasons”.
“We’ve had terrific rainfall over the past month or so but we still need to take a responsible approach to the way we provide natural grass surfaces. This drought resistant surface is just what we need”, Cr. Marrow said.
Residents will notice a browning off the North Park surface over the preparation period and this is a normal and expected part of the conversion process.
