Heatwave

Heatwaves occur when there are a several consecutive days of above average temperatures, often combined with high humidity. Extreme heat can affect the health of humans and animals, leading to serious or even fatal consequences.

Heatwave Mitigation Plan

With the frequency and intensity of heatwaves in Victoria expected to increase, Council has developed a Heatwave Mitigation Plan to minimise the harmful effects of extreme heat on the health and wellbeing of residents.

The plan indentifies vulnerable persons living in the Northern Grampians Shire municipality and aims to raise awareness of the dangers posed by heatwaves.

Council receives information directly from the Department of Health when a heatwave is forecast.

In the event of extreme weather conditions, community facilities may be made available to provide residents with relief from the heat. Details of these locations will be communicated through the media.

Preventing heat related illness

The Department of Health provides further information on keeping cool during a heatwave.
